Treatment of MRSA: A Moving Target.

If antibiotic treatment is clinically indicated, it should be guided by the susceptibility profile of the organism. There are limited antibiotics available for the treatment of MRSA infections. Treatment of MRSA skin infections includes carefully cleaning and covering any open sores. If treatment is delayed the bacteria may invade the blood stream and can cause fatal septic shock. Treatment of CA-MRSA is often more difficult than for other staph infections because the choice of antibiotics is more limited. Immediate, accurate, and effective diagnosis and treatment is essential to limit the spread of CA-MRSA skin infections among children and their families. In controlled phase III trials, Linezolid was as effective as Vancomycin in the treatment of MRSA. The new MRSA antibiotic treatment with the latest drug,Linezolid is currently undergoing a phase II clinical trial for the treatment of MRSA.

Some infection control specialists say that we need radical measures to improve one of the worst rates of MRSA infection in Europe. Skin and soft tissue were the most common infection sites for all MRSA patients. Sites of infection were variable and multiple and MRSA antibiotic treatment regimes for eradication were variable, with varying outcomes. Superficial soft tissue infection was the most common presentation, accounting for 65% of CA-MRSA infections.
